We introduce and engage underrepresented students to explore educational and career opportunities in (STEAM) fields.
STEAM In The Game is a Virtual STEAM Gaming and eSports Camp. The aim is to introduce and engage learners―males and females ages 13-18—to explore creative technologies and career opportunities in a sub-field of STEAM, 2D and 3D computer interactive game design and development.

Our approach is simple; attract (Gaming and eSport Tournament), awareness (Inspirational Speakers), engage (STEAM concepts and challenges). This educational program uses the tool of Games and eSport as an entry point for learning computer science, physics, visual effects, science, and production using the Unity game engine, which is a free open source game platform.

Though we welcome all students, we strongly encourage Black and Hispanic/Latinx students to apply. The program provides skills-building, exposure and Black and Latinx/Hispanic mentor-models, which is important for students to achieve long and rewarding careers in STEAM fields.

Game Design & Theory

Does a certain player always have an advantage, no matter the behavior of the other players? Or is the game always balanced, as long as the players involved make intelligent decisions most of the time? This Session will draw from the fields of Mathematics and Computer Science to understand the decision making science for not just humans, but computers, too.

eSport Development

The computer gaming industry is enormous — it’s estimated to be a $150 billion market in 2019. In this session, participants will learn the fundamentals of the convergence of brain, body and behaviors of elite esports athletes to serve as a platform for adopting innovative, at-scale approaches to students outcome.

XR Production

Interested in learning how Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) content is created from inception to delivery and how the 360 environment, immersive and interactive content are integrated with narrative story development and design. Throughout the session, leading our expert coach will cover all stages of the process.

Computer Science

In this session, students will create a VR simulated environment for exploring computer science concepts in the same way they interact with the real world. We will make the concepts visual, tangible, and responsive, which makes it easier for learners to develop transferable skills in high demand 21st century disciplines and careers.

VR & AR Platforms

Enterprise applications for immersive technologies are growing rapidly and on the cusp of mass adoption. Virtual, mixed, and augmented reality (known as VR, MR, and AR, respectively) are together expected to become a $108 billion industry by 2021. Throughout the program, students will be exposed and guided toward building for immersive platforms.
